Tom used to go for a walk every day on the beach. One day he noticed a man who bent down 【1】 (pick) up something and then threw it into water.

When he 【2】(get) close he saw that 【3】man was picking up the starfish that had been washed up on the beach and he was picking them up one at a time and throwing them back in the water.

Feeling 【4】(confuse),Tom approached the man and said,” Good evening, I was wondering what you are doing.” The man smiled and replied,” I am throwing back the starfish【5】were washed up on the shore and if I didn't throw them back into the ocean, then they would die from lack of oxygen.”

Tom replied,” I understand...” Then a little while 【6】(late), he said,” But there must be thousands of starfish on this beach and you can't 【7】(possible) help all of them. And this may be happening on hundreds of【8】(beach). Then how can 【9】(throw) some of these starfish back into the ocean make a difference?”

The man smiled, bent down and picked up yet 【10】starfish, and as he threw it back into the ocean, he replied,” It will make a difference to that one.”
